Due to H1N1, we couldn’t meet up as often for group discussions. Hokkien Huay Guan also minimized its hokkien lessons. Hence, jobs are delegated amongst ourselves and we have to research more on the hokkien language. Our writing competition have to be halted due to the H1N1. Besides the utilisation of resources have to be dragged due to H1N1. Even so, our group believes that this guide book will turn out to be a success as it tailored to meet the needs of the elderly.

This service learning project has certainly been an enriching experience for me. I have learnt about the many troubles that the youth have faced when communicating with the elderly and have certainly felt their frustrations, both from the elderly and from the youth. I have also learnt to work with strangers better through the various CIP activities and with my group as I did not know two of the members before I had joined. I have also gained various problem solving skills as we as a group had to think up of ways to aid the youth in communicating with the elderly more easily and efficiently. I learnt to be more flexible with my timetable and learnt that sacrifices had to be made in order to make this project a success as I had to spend extra time on certain days after school to meet with the group and our mentor. I became a more accountable person through this as I had to meet strict deadlines. This project experience also taught me how to work cohesively with a team as we had to split up our workload to ensure that we all got a fair share of work. The project also taught me how to empathise with people better as I saw the state of the elderly and understood their situation in their communications with the youths. This project was really an enriching experience for me and I hope that our product will be a great asset to those in need of communication tips with the elderly.

OBSTACLES AND CHALLENGES

One major challenge is that the whole team was lack of experience in communicating with the elderly, not only without the skills, in some cases without the language. But eventually, by mixing with them, we manage to understand sincerity and patience is the key. We persevered on and did more homework on the hokkien language.

Besides this year, the H1N1 flu had greatly disrupted how team’s progress. Hokkien Huay Guan didn’t held the hokkien lesson after March due to the flu. Hence, we have to find out from other sources ourselves. Also, we couldn’t meet up face to face which create some miscommunications and delays of deadline. But we managed to cherish the time we have together to get things done efficiently. The jobs delegated were still completed.
